Croydon Philharmonic Choir presents Choral and Classical Masterpieces

Add to my Calendar 30-03-2019 19:30 30-03-2019 21:30 36 Croydon Philharmonic Choir presents Choral and Classical Masterpieces For its next concert, on Saturday 30 March, the Croydon Philharmonic Choir is singing two majestic choral works that were composed or performed as celebrations. One is Mozart’s Coronation Mass, which he wrote in 1779 and was performed at the coronation of Francis I as Holy Roman Emperor in Frankfurt in 1792. Mozart called the piece a mass in C, but later it acquired the name of Coronation Mass, which stuck. The other is Haydn’s Te Deum, which he wrote in 1800 at the prompting of Empress Marie Therese, ruler of the Hapsburg Empire. It was first performed at Eisenstadt, Austria, in honour of a remarkable visiting trio: Lord Horatio Nelson, his mistress Lady Emma Hamilton, and her husband Sir William Hamilton, who were making a lengthy journey from Naples – where Sir William was British Ambassador – to London. Nelson was hailed in Europe as a hero for having defeated Napoleon at the battle of the Nile, and the Te Deum was performed to mark his victory. The two pieces are celebratory in nature, with both the young Wolfgang Mozart, then 26, and the mature Joseph Haydn, 68, displaying their full technical and creative prowess. Mozart creates a powerful interplay between the choir and the soloists, while Haydn focusses on chorus alone to compose a piece that is essentially a concerto for choir and orchestra. Two other pieces complete the concert programme. The first is Vivaldi’s rousing Concerto for Two Trumpets, which will feature choir vice-president Crispian Steele-Perkins, renowned for his performances on numerous movie scores, including Jaws, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. The second trumpeter will be Tom Rainer. The second piece is Mozart’s Exsultate, Jubilate, an exquisite composition – written when Mozart was just sixteen – for orchestra and solo soprano. Mozart wrote it when he was just sixteen and the demanding solo part will be sung by the outstanding Australian soprano Kiandra Howarth. The conductor will be choir music director David Gibson, with the New London Sinfonia as the orchestra. Four soloists perform in the Coronation Mass: as well as Kiandra Howarth, they are Annabel Kennedy (mezzo), Peter Martin (tenor) and Edward Jowle (baritone). The concert is at St Mary Magdalene Church, Canning Road, Croydon CR0 6QD. It starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost just £12 (£6 for under 16s). You can purchase them from [email protected], or at the door on the night.
