Programme Note
Handel's Messiah, probably the best known and loved oratorio of all, was written in 1741 and first performed in Dublin. It was the sixth of his oratorios, a relatively new genre at the time, which he turned to following a run of opera composing. The text begins in Part I with prophecies by Isaiah and others, and moves to the annunciation of the nativity. In Part II, Handel concentrates on the Passion and ends with the "Hallelujah" chorus. In Part III he covers the resurrection of the dead and Christ's glorification in heaven.
Messiah will be our first outing to Godmanchester church, where we look forward to performing by candlelight in the lovely acoustic there. We are delighted to be joined by young singers from Hinchingbrooke School, who will be singing the duet version of How Beautiful are the Feet for us.
Save the date, Saturday November 16th in Godmanchester Church for what promises to be a memorable evening.
