Programme Note

The Requiem, Duruflé’s longest and most substantial work, was composed in 1947 at the end of World War II. The focus is not on hell and damnation but on images of rest and peace. The original orchestration calls for large orchestra including triple winds, full brass ensemble, several percussionists, organ and strings, but Duruflé’s third and final orchestration is more restrained and will be accompanied by Ben Giddens on organ.

Francis Poulenc famously said of his Gloria "‘When I wrote this piece I had in mind those frescoes by Gozzoli where the angels stick out their tongues; and also some serious Benedictine monks I had once seen revelling in a game of football."
