Programme Note

Amersham & Chesham Bois Choral Society, joined by Thames Voyces and The Thame Children's Choir, will perform the ever popular Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. Composed in 1935/36 and first performed in 1937, the work has featured in hundreds of films and television commercials. Based on the classical idea of the fickleness of fortune, the work consists of 24 poems, mostly in secular Latin with a few in Middle High German and Old French, on themes including the ephemeral nature of life and life's pleasures. The opening movement, O Fortuna, is reprised at the end.

The choirs are conducted by Nick Austin, with Ben Giddens and Simon Dinsdale on pianos and the percussionists of the British Sinfonietta
