Add to my Calendar 16-07-2023 15:00 16-07-2023 17:00 36 Solem String Quartet play Clara Schumann, Janacek, Beethoven Composed in 1853, the year before the tragic death of her husband, Clara Schumann’s Romances were originally written for violin and piano. We hear them today in an arrangement by Amy Tress, the Solem Quartet’s first violin. Janáček’s first quartet refers to Tolstoy’s short story about a husband who kills his wife, a pianist, in a fit of insane jealousy. He is afraid of the passion she displays as she plays the eponymous Beethoven sonata with her handsome violinist partner. Beethoven’s late string quartets are the ultimate expression of the form. In 1825 when he wrote the Opus 132 Quartet, he was nearing the end of his life – but here once again demonstrates that despite everything, the human spirit will overcome.
