Clara Schumann’s 4 Pièces caractéristiques, composed when she was just sixteen, reveal the early brilliance of a young pianist–composer whose artistry defied the expectations of her time. The concert continues with Brahms’ lyrical and introspective Symphony No. 3, a work infused with warmth and restraint, reflecting his lifelong admiration for both Clara and Robert. The evening concludes with Robert Schumann’s exuberant Symphony No. 3, the ‘Rhenish’, inspired by the landscapes and spirit of the Rhineland. Bound by friendship, inspiration and mutual respect, Clara, Robert and Brahms formed a unique musical trio, and their shared legacy resonates throughout this programme.
