Programme Note
Horsham Symphony are back at St Marys Church Horsham for the first concert of their 2024/25 season. For this concert Steve Dummer performs a dual role. Regular concertgoers will be familiar with him as the principal conductor; on this occasion he begins the concert playing and directing Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. Steve has conducted the orchestra since 2006 but was a member of the clarinet section prior to this, as a schoolboy in the 1980’s. Alongside conducting Steve continues to perform regularly in the UK and abroad. Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto contains many beautiful lyrical melodies and is one of the most loved compositions for clarinet and has certainly been sounding fantastic in rehearsals so far.
In the second half of the concert Steve will conduct Bruckner’s 4th Symphony, a fitting choice as it is the 200thcentenary of his birth this year. The symphony is one of his most popular works, the brass section has a strong presence in this symphony, with the horn section a particular feature.
