Programme Note
Performers
Apollo’s Cabinet was founded at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2018. A truly international ensemble with members hailing from different countries, their aim is to draw from their diverse musical backgrounds and find a balance in their interpretation of pieces, based on historically informed performance practice and inventive, refreshing ideas.
Apollo’s Cabinet have participated in masterclasses with and received coaching from Pavlo Beznosiuk, Robert Ehrlich, James Johnstone, Karel van Steenhoven, Christopher Suckling and Ian Wilson.
They have been selected as one of the Brighton Early Music Festival Live! Ensembles 2019/2020 and were winners of the Brian Nisbet Prize 2019. They have performed together at Guildhall’s baroque opera production, in Handel’s Water Music & Music for the Royal Fireworks as part of a larger baroque orchestra, as well as performing cantata repertoire at the London Handel Festival 2019.
This season, the ensemble has been invited to give several lunchtime recitals in London and will perform in concerts in Switzerland, Austria and Spain, and at the Brighton Early Music Festival and the Lake District Festival, amongst others.
The programme
Originating from the collection of suites by Francois Couperin called Les Goûts-réunis, the programme follows the idea of uniting the different tastes and typical styles of Italy, France, England and Germany. It includes the Italian virtuosity of Corelli and Vivaldi, the stunningly detailed music by Marais and Couperin at the court of Versailles, and the explorations and influence of new cultures in the music of “adopted“ Englishman Handel and the well-travelled Telemann.
