Programme Note
Part of the Petworth Festival - 11 to 29 July 2023
We welcome a star-studded quintet led by violinist Jack Liebeck, of whom Gramophone magazine recently wrote – ‘his playing is virtually flawless in its technical ease, scintillating articulateness and purity of tone.’ High praise indeed.
The centre piece in a night of nature-inspired Romantic works is Elgar’s epic piano quintet written at the composer’s home in Fittleworth and which, according to Lady Elgar, was inspired by strangely-shaped trees at nearby Flexham Park. As local legend had it, they were the forms of sacrilegious Spanish monks forever encased by lightning in the trees. The programme also includes Rebecca Clarke’s delightful Midsummer Moon which evokes a peaceful and magical moonlit landscape, and the famous melody Edelweiss – which may just have the audience humming along.
