Programme Note
Leading choir and period-instrument ensemble, Armonico Consort performs Monteverdi’s Vespers, a towering masterpiece of the early Baroque.
Over 400 years old, this astounding work is full of surprises, from brilliant instrumental writing, to opulent choruses and moving arias. Its publication in 1610 almost certainly helped Monteverdi gain the prestigious post of maestro di cappella at St Mark’s in Venice, which he kept until his death in 1643.
Playing on instruments of the period, Armonico Consort is joined by The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble: the cornett is an early wind instrument and the sackbut a forerunner of the modern trombone.
