Ruth GippsSonata for Cello & Piano

Joseph Spooner – cello
Duncan Honeybourne – piano

Programme Note

Ahead of his recording of Ruth Gipps’ Sonata for Cello & Piano to mark the centenary of her birth, we are delighted to welcome back cellist Joseph Spooner, described by The Times as “… a joy to listen to“.

To coincide with the release of his new ‘Contemporary Piano Soundbites’ CD, Duncan will perform a selection of pieces which he commissioned during lockdown.

The original aim of the Piano Soundbites project was, in Duncan’s words, “to harness the zeitgeist of our present situation, to bring comfort and enjoyment to a large ready-made audience stuck at home, to aid musicians badly affected by the “cultural lockdown” and to add to the contemporary repertoire, creating an artistic keepsake of this extraordinary phase in our lives. Contemporary Piano Soundbites is a collection of solo piano miniatures composed, directly or indirectly, in response to the 2020 coronavirus crisis.”
