Programme Note

Come to Wirksworth to hear Helix Ensemble with music through the centuries.

We start with the second symphony of Chevalier de Saint Georges who was not only a very skilful violinist and composer but also excelled at fencing!   He was a contemporary of Mozart but as a black musician his name and music have only more recently become well-known.

The wind players are joined by just a cello and double bass for Dvorak’s Wind Serenade, a popular piece composed in 1878 in four movements.

Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony for Strings is a transcription of his eighth string quartet, the new score expertly written by the original viola player in the Borodin quartet that was coached by Shostakovich himself.

Andante Festivo Is a single-movement composition written by Sibelius in 1922 for string quartet but he rescored the music for string orchestra in 1938.  A recording is still available of Sibelius conducting a live performance.
