The concert opens with the great German composer Johannes Brahms’s brooding Tragic Overture before moving into France with Georges Bizet’s ever-popular L’Arlésienne suites. The evening is rounded out with the first symphony by the little-known Russian composer Vasily Kalinnikov, a piece that – like its author – definitely deserves to be much more widely known.
