Programme Note
Choral merges with jazz for an evening of memorable melodies by modern composers- a mixture of sacred and secular music, mostly in a jazz style.
A Little Jazz Mass by Bob Chilcott is a 'gorgeous, soulful' and highly original setting of the Latin Missa Brevis, and it was first performed in New Orleans in 2004. Henryk Górecki’s Totus Tuus, his most popular unaccompanied choral work, fuses choral simplicity with his deeply felt religious faith, and was composed to celebrate Pope John Paul II’s visit to his native Poland in 1987. Will Todd’s gospel-influenced Songs of Peace was composed in memory of his mother, and its themes are love, loss and eternity. Jazz legend George Shearing’s Songs and Sonnets dramatically changes the mood, with fresh, exciting and accessible settings of poems and songs by Shakespeare, that glorify love and the return of Spring.
The programme also features a jazz set by the trio of instrumentalists: Nikki Iles, one of the UK's most accomplished jazz pianists, Dave Whitford (bass strings) and Luke Tomlinson (drums).
