Programme Note
We begin our 48th season with a concert that’s befitting for Remembrance Weekend. Our Musical Director, Ian Smith, will conduct the choir in performances of Cherubini’s Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem and his Cantique de Jean Racine. The concert will be accompanied by Paul Carr (organ) with soloists Eve McGrath (soprano), and Nicolas Moodie (baritone).
Cherubini’s Requiem in C minor was commissioned by Louis XVIII for a memorial service in 1817 on the 24th anniversary of the execution of Louis XVI during the French Revolution. Its success was immediate and so overwhelming that it seemed to gain a virtual monopoly for memorial concerts in France. It’s remarkable, therefore, that this beautiful work, admired by fellow composers such as Beethoven, Berlioz, Mendelssohn and Brahms, subsequently fell into obscurity.
Fauré began work on his Requiem in 1887 ‘for the pleasure of it’, though the death of his father two years earlier almost certainly provided the initial inspiration. The death of his mother during the early stages of its composition spurred him on to complete the work in early 1888. For the first version there were only five movements (Introit et Kyrie, Sanctus, Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei and In Paradisum) with just one soloist, a soprano to sing the well-known Pie Jesu movement. In 1893, Fauré added two new movements (Offertoire and Libera Me) both of which require a baritone soloist. This is the version we will be performing. Fauré’s Requiem is now hugely popular, regularly featuring near the top of Classic FM’s Hall of Fame which lists the UK’s 300 favourite pieces of classical music.
We will also perform Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine, written for a composition competition in 1865 and another of the composer’s most popular works.
