Programme Note
The Garleton Singers Autumn concert will mark the 60th anniversary of the death of C S Lewis and his passion for the universe. The main work is a recent large-scale composition by James Whitbourn, The Seven Heavens, which charts the different stages of Lewis' life by way of the moods and characters of the medieval planets - The Moon, Jupiter, the Sun etc. There is also a second layer to the concert which celebrates St Cecelia, the patron saint of music, whose feast day falls on 22nd November, the very day that Lewis died.
Other music in the concert will include Song for St Cecelia by local composer Ken Johnson, the opening titles of the film Shaddowlands, a wonderfully atmospheric piece by American composer Libby Larsen and Vaughn Williams beautiful Serenade to Music in a new arrangement for the seven instruments that will accompany the singers in this performance.
