Said to have ‘the knack of making simple musical ideas appear freshly mysterious’, she was born in Cambridge to a Scottish family and spent several years working as a community musician, also later directing the Spitalfields Festival, whilst building a catalogue of works and a reputation as one of the country’s foremost composers. Her music often draws on sources from medieval history, as well as the traditional stories and music of her native Scotland.
