Programme

George Frideric HandelIsrael in Egypt, HWV 54

Performers

Douglas Lee – Conductor

Ariel Consort of London
Belsize Baroque Orchestra

Programme Note

If Messiah is Handel’s best-known oratorio, Israel in Egypt is certainly his most dramatic. In telling the story of Israel’s sojourn in Egypt, the Egyptian plagues and the Exodus, Handel uses his most colourful and descriptive musical language to illustrate those extraordinary events, with startling effect. Our performance will be at baroque pitch, complete with baroque trumpets and trombones, thus revealing the full palette of Handel's unequalled gift for word painting.
