Programme Note
A concert of charming choral works with their origins in the traditional song and dance music of peoples from around the world. Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer (Love Song Waltzes) with piano accompaniment for four hands explore the subject of love. Copland’s Old American Songs are based on traditional Shaker, minstrel, hymn and other tunes reflecting the history of the American nation. Britten’s simple and unpretentious Choral Dances from his opera Gloriana are sung in honour of Queen Elizabeth I by country girls and young rustics. Tormis’s Estonian Lullabies are unembellished four-part settings of songs which lie at the heart of Estonia’s cultural and musical heritage.
