Programme Note
The centrepiece of this recital is Chopin's Op. 10 Études, as elaborated for the left hand alone by Leopold Godowsky. They are fantastically challenging for the performer, and it is extremely rare for the whole set to be performed in one programme. Here they will be played in groups of three, interspersed with charming miniatures by Mompou and Bridge.
Unlike much of the left hand piano repertoire, Godowsky's oeuvre for the left hand was not composed specifically for pianists who had lost the use of their right hand but to help all pianists to develop the capability of their left hand, which he considered to be an undervalued and underused resource.
The recital also includes two of Bach's noblest works: the famous Chaconne from the solo violin partita in D minor in a wonderful piano arrangement by Brahms, and Stefan Warzycki's own arrangement of the Chromatic Fantasia.
