Programme Note
Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E flat, K. 493, written in 1786, was a bold venture into a then relatively new genre. With a symphonic breadth that moves far beyond the intimacy of salon music, the work combines sparkling piano writing with intricate interplay among the strings, producing a finely balanced dialogue between instruments. Its expansive first movement, tender Larghetto, and jovial finale reveal Mozart at the height of his maturity, effortlessly blending elegance with drama. By contrast, Richard Strauss’s youthful Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 13 (1884) brims with Romantic intensity, betraying both the influence of Brahms and the composer’s precocious flair for sweeping gesture. Written when Strauss was still a teenager, the quartet marries traditional craftsmanship with a restless, forward-driving energy, foreshadowing the orchestral brilliance that would define his later music. Passionate melodies, stormy climaxes, and moments of lyrical repose make it an irresistible companion to Mozart’s poised classicism.
