Programme Note

First performed in Leipzig in 1724, Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion is a powerful, dramatic tour de force which takes the audience through the events of the crucifixion of Jesus.

Soloists, chorus and orchestra work together to depict the pain of Jesus, the bewilderment of the disciples and the anger of the crowd as well as helping the audience to be part of the drama with the inclusion of German traditional hymns.

The Cathedral Choir, Cathedral Chorus, soloists and Baroque players present the St John Passion for the first time since 2019, and it is wonderful that our annual performances are starting again just ahead of next year’s 300th anniversary of the first performance. Join us for an evening of wonderful music, filled with drama and meditation, in the spectacular setting of our beautiful Cathedral.

Andrew Carwood, Director of Music, conducts an orchestra with a packed audience in the background.
