Programme Note
Kew Sinfonia and our Music Director Daniel Hogan invite you to join us for an evening of delightful music at our summer concert, as we return to St Paul’s Church in Grove Park.
We begin with Tchaikovsky’s Orchestral Suite No 1. Although similar to much of Tchaikovsky’s previous musical output, this piece also shows many signs of the composer still to come. Unconstrained by the boundaries of a full symphony, the suite is written with a more free approach. Listen out for familiar strains you will recognise in Tchaikovsky’s orchestration, reminding you of his popular ballet works and symphonies.
For our second work, Prokofiev’s 2nd violin concerto, Kew Sinfonia are privileged to be working again with super-talented soloist Laure Chan. Don’t miss the chance to hear this brilliant multi-award winning violinist, who has recently been hailed as a rising star by BBC Music Magazine and on Classic FM’s “30 under 30” list in 2024. The Prokofiev is in turns full of hauntingly beautiful lyricism and also wildly frenetic with thrilling, percussive Spanish dance music and a fiendishly difficult solo violin part. It promises to be a truly spirited performance!
We finish the evening with dance music from Hungary as we play Kodaly’s Dances from Galanta, drawn from an anthology of gypsy folk music. Kodaly’s clever orchestration explores the broad scope of the orchestra’s range, encompassing a gorgeously lush, rich string sound and charming melodic wind parts. Evoking images of rural countryside, beautiful sweeping tunes give way to whirling, fast dance rhythms, bringing to mind colourful costumes and exuberant traditional dance entertainment.
We look forward to welcoming you for a joyous evening!
