Programme Note
Over My Shoulder tells the stories of two very different and fascinating singers: Elisabeth Schumann, international classical soprano, and Jessie Matthews, darling of the 1930s stage and screen. It was a photograph of the grave of Elisabeth Schumann followed by the discovery of Jessie Matthews’ grave in the same churchyard that first prompted the idea for an entertainment.
Each of these women was hugely famous in her day, reaching the very peak of the performing profession, and yet their names are hardly recognised now by younger generations of music-lovers. Over My Shoulder sets out to remedy this by weaving together the lives of these two singers as an introduction to their music and artistry, built around the unexpected intersection of their stories here in England.
Performed by Clare McCaldin (mezzo-soprano) and Paul Turner (piano), Over My Shoulder is a full-length entertainment with an interval and includes music by Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Strauss, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Johannes Brahms, Otto Klemperer, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Noel Coward, Harry Woods and Rodgers & Hart.
