Programme Note

Weymouth Choral Society will present ‘Music of Majesty’ featuring a performance of Mozart’s ‘Coronation Mass’ and selected pieces with a royal or English connection. With guests Simon Earl (organ), Winston Leese (trumpet) and four vocal soloists (Nicola Burley, Leah Page, Jonathan Valender & Gareth Jones) adding to the choral items with solo features, we promise a royal banquet of music!

Mozart’s ‘Coronation Mass’ is one of his best-known choral works, full of contrast and lyrical themes. It earned its nickname most likely due to being performed during coronation festivities in Prague in 1791/2. Complemented by a wide variety of styles of pieces that have been played at royal ceremonies, weddings and funerals, or have a quintessential English theme, you’ll hear from composers as diverse as Purcell and Handel through to Quilter, Finzi, Walton and Vaughan Williams.
