Benjamin Britten is centre stage for this concert in aid of the Britten as a Boy statue appeal

Britten’s Ceremony of Carols will form the centrepiece, along with works by other composers, living locally, including Alexander Campkin. Lucinder Pennick accompanies on the Harp and Vetta Wise will conduct. The choir’s patron, Zeb Soanes (Classic FM) will present the concert and read his children’s story Gaspard’s Christmas, with its carol by Jonathan Dove and live illustration by James Mayhew. There will be a chance to win James’ beautiful artwork in the interval raffle. Proceeds from the concert will go to the statue fund. About Britten as a Boy project Benjamin Britten is Lowestoft’s most accomplished son. Born in 1913, he showed musical talent at an early age and went on to become a central figure of 20th-century British music as an outstanding composer, conductor, and pianist. Britten as a Boy is a project to raise funding for a statue of Britten depicted as a child, by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The statue will be placed, facing out to sea, between Britten’s childhood home and the promenade.
