Programme Note
For their summer concert, Hesperos choir perform Ralph Vaughan Williams' Mass in G Minor of 1921 and Gerald Finzi's Festal Anthem Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice. The Mass in G Minor is Vaughan Williams' homage to the polyphonic English Mass settings of the sixteenth century, but with its own distinctive sound-world. It is written for double choir and solo quartet and has been described as a choral equivalent to the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Finzi's Lo, the Full, Final, Sacrifice (1946) is considered one of the composer's finest works, setting a vivid Eucharistic text by Richard Crashaw for choir and substantial organ accompaniment.
