Programme Note

Rossini’s Petite Messe was composed 30 years after he retired from composing operas. He described it as the last of ‘the sins of his old age’, but ‘small’ (petite) it certainly isn’t! Also, set as a serious religious work, it contains many delightful and theatrical touches that remind us of Rossini’s operas. The unusual scoring was originally for voices, 2 pianos and a harmonium, only later did he write an orchestral version. Buckingham Choral Society will perform the original score with highly-acclaimed soloists Kevin Vockerodt and Craig Greene - piano, and Malcolm Hicks, harmonium, and young talented singers from some of the UK’s top music colleges.

The programme also features the delightful piano favourite, Fauré’s Dolly Suite. This suite for piano 4-hands was written over a period of 3 years and marks events in the life of Hélène (nickname Dolly), the daughter of the composer’s mistress.

The concert will be conducted by Julian Mann, Musical Director of Buckingham Choral Society.
