Programme Note
Buckingham Choral Society is proud to present an evening of 2 stunning pieces of music written by Haydn and Mozart.
Composed in 1799, the Theresienmesse is the fourth of the six great masses that Haydn composed toward the end of his career. The almost childlike cheerfulness of Haydn’s music, its inexhaustible inventiveness and its perfection of design conceal a considerable inner strength. This fusion of exuberance, originality, classical elegance and intellectual power explains to a large extent the compelling appeal of his music.
Vesperae solennes KV 339 are Mozart’s final composition for the Salzburg Cathedral in 1780 was probably intended for the celebration of St. Rupert, (the "confessor" of the title and a patron saint of Salzburg).
It consists of six movements of wonderful, religious music, culminating in, surely, one of Mozart's finest tunes in the Laudate Dominum.
The concert will be conducted by our Musical Director, Julian Mann and accompanied on the organ by Craig Green, Director of Music at Stowe School.
