Programme Note

A programme of Russian Classics featuring music by three musical giants - Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky - conducted by Tonbridge Philharmonic Society's new Music Director, Mark Biggins.

The concert will open with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sadko, Op.5. Often referred to as the first Russian tone poem, the bylina of Sadko is as significant in Russian folklore as the tale of Beowulf in Britain. The musical story-telling of Sadko paves the way for Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.1, to be performed by rising star Yume Fuijse, a BBC Introducing Classical artist and prize-winning recent graduate of London’s Royal College of Music. Written in the summer of 1917, the concerto was not heard until 1923, partly due to the difficulty in finding a soloist capable of and willing to play it! The piece includes some of the most rhapsodic music composed during the first quarter of the 20th century. The concert is set to conclude with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, a monument to the Russian Romantic symphonic form, and depicting Tchaikovsky’s fascination with the concept of ‘Fate’.
