Programme Note
The Addison Oratorio Choir is joined by the Brandenburg Sinfonia for their concert on March 28th. The first half of the concert features Cecilia McDowall's luminous, poignant and moving 'Stabat Mater', a setting of a meditation on the sorrows of the Virgin Mary as she stands by the cross, for which the choir are joined by the Godolphin and Latymer School Junior Chamber Choir. To continue the theme of reflection and loss, to begin the concert the orchestra will play Edwin Roxburgh's searing and intense 'Lament for the victims of conflict', originally written in 2003 as a reaction to the horrors of the Bosnian conflict, the central theme of the work is as sadly relevant today as it was then.
The second half will consist of one large-scale work, Beethoven's 'Mass in C' - on the one hand devotional, but on the other, in contrast to other works in the concert, a piece of boundless energy and joy. A fitting celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest composers of all.
