Programme Note
Shakespeare’s allusion to our ‘little life rounded with a sleep’, is echoed in our programme of love and loss expressed in elusive and spiritual music. Esther’s harp magic accompanies atmospheric folk songs; lovers, fairies and angels are all about but nobody is quite what they seem. In the pivotal piece, Holst’s Rig Veda, heavenly singers hymn the dawn with harp accompaniment. Northern Lights – seen by the ancients as spirits – are evoked by Eriks Ešenvalds as other-worldly sounds. Schumann, Elgar and Bartók add to the enchanting mix.
