Programme Note
The Choir of St Peter’s Church, Vocalis chamber choir (director James Savage-Hanford), the Harrogate Bach Players (leader Fiona Love) and professional soloists Toby Ward (Evangelist), Andrew Greenan (Jesus), Eleonore Cockerham (soprano), Emma Carrington (alto), Charlie Eastwood (tenor) and Adam Brown (bass), together with choristers from Leeds Cathedral will be directed by John Longstaff, Musical Director at St Peter’s Church.
John, (whose musical activities include conducting, composing and orchestrating), collaborated with Andrew Greenan on this performing English version of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. The inaugural performance was at St Peter’s Church in 2019 and has proved popular with choirs and choral societies across the UK since then. This new English translation direct from the German has made Bach's monumental retelling of the story of Jesus's betrayal, arrest and crucifixion very accessible for both singers and audiences alike.
