Programme Note
The Trumpet overture is an early work by Mendelssohn which takes its name from the opening trumpet fanfare. It is an energetic work, full of youthful exuberance with dramatic and lyric moments.
We're delighted to welcome back pianist Patrick Mattar to perform Beethoven's Emperor Concerto. It is a large scale work, heroic in character, but also containing moments of exquisite beauty and an uplifting finale. Beethoven wrote it during a period of intense compositional activity, at a time when Vienna was under siege from Napoleon, and did not give it the name Emperor. This was added by later by an English publisher.
Schumann's second symphony was completed in October 1846, at a time when his mental health problems were becoming severe. However there is no trace of self-pity in the work. It has a lively first movement, with sprightly playful tunes, a scherzo with constant driving energy, a slow movement of intense beauty and a finale which is boldly triumphant.
