Programme Note
Our concert opens with Mendelssohn's romantic Hebrides overture, inspired by a visit to the island of Staffa. The music evokes the natural beauty of the sea islands and the grandeur of the cliffs and the spectacular basalt sea cave known as Fingal's Cave.
We are delighted to welcome back talented Portuguese pianist Artur Pereira to perform Mozart's Piano Concerto no 21 in C Major. Mozart wrote this concerto at a time when his prestige in Vienna was at its height. It is a work of great drive and energy, with a simple lyrical slow movement which is one of the best known and most popular pieces he wrote.
Beethoven's Seventh symphony was completed in 1812. Wagner famously described it as the Apotheosis of the Dance, alluding to its ceaseless rhythmic drive and energy. From its first performance it has been a great favourite with audiences, and it should prove an exciting conclusion to our 2017-18 season.
