Petros Singers

Programme Note

’Since singing is so good a thing, I wish all men would learn to sing.’

In honour of William’s Byrd’s famous maxim, Petros Singers present a concert praising the virtues of singing. Featuring secular music by Thomas Weelkes and Judith Weir, alongside sacred anthems by Claudio Monteverdi and Byrd himself, the performance will also include J.S. Bach’s totemic motet Singet dem Herr nein neues lied, as well as organ solos from Petros Singers' new accompanist, Alex Knight.

Petros Singers is West London’s leading amateur chamber choir. They perform a wide variety of music – from baroque to contemporary, from large-scale works to exquisite miniatures – placing particular emphasis on vibrant and communicative singing.

Richard Bannan was a choral scholar at Clare College, Cambridge before embarking on a career as a professional vocal musician, arranger and teacher. He now sings as a Lay-Clerk at St George’s Chapel, Windsor and with many of the country’s major professional ensembles.

Alex Knight combines a bustling freelance career as an organist, pianist, continuo player, conductor, music producer and teacher with his posts as Accompanist for Petros Singers, Organ Scholar at St Paul’s Cathedral, and Musical Director for the Treble Chefs.
