Programme Note
Our first concert of the 2024-2025 season is a celebration of music by both Haydn and Handel. It will also feature a 21st Century Benedicite by Yorkshire composer Tim Knight.
Missa Sancti Nicolai, Mass No. 6 in G major, also known as the Nicolaimesse, is a mass by Joseph Haydn, composed around 1772 and revised in 1802.
The Foundling Hospital Anthem, also known by its longer title “Blessed are they that considereth the poor” is a choral anthem composed by George Frideric Handel in 1749. It was written for the Foundling Hospital in London and was first performed in the chapel there. Composed 10 years before his death, it was Handel’s last piece of English church music. The work concludes with the Hallelujah Chorus.
The Benedicite by Tim Kight was written in 2014 for the fifth anniversary of the Masterworks Chorale. This short work sets the cheerful text of the Morning Canticle. It has received performances both sides of the Atlantic.
