Programme Note
SASO will play Rimsky-Korsakov’s Snow Maiden Suite, Glazunov’s
Violin Concerto in A minor, Liadov’s Kikimora, and Respighi’s Pines of Rome.
Rimsky-Korsakov taught the other three composers at various times.
The Glazunov is a concise and very popular violin concerto, with no breaks between its distinct but un-numbered or identified sections. For this concert Charlotte Fairbairn relinquishes her usual role of leader of the orchestra, to be the soloist in the concerto.
The other three pieces are all quite programmatic, relating to and evoking distinct scenes or stories. Pines of Rome depicts four specific sites in the city. Kikimora is a legendary creature who “grows up with a magician in the mountains”. The Snow Maiden opera features mythological, human, and ‘half-mythical’ characters, the Snow Maiden herself striving to love a human, and perishing in the attempt.
SASO welcomes guest conductor Dan Shilladay, and guest leader Stephanie Waite.
