Programme Note

SASO continues its 2024-25 season on Saturday 10th May 2025, at St Saviour's Church, Sandpit Lane, St Albans AL1 4DF.

Doors will open at 6:50 p.m. for a 7:30 p.m. start. Refreshments will be available in the interval, between the concerto and the symphony.

More famous for the Gilbert and Sullivan light operas, Arthur Sullivan also wrote 11 major orchestral works, ten choral works and oratorios, two ballets, incidental music to several plays, and numerous church pieces, songs, and piano and chamber pieces.

Max Bruch wrote three violin concertos, but only the First (written in 1865) has stood the test of time. Though sonata form remains the basis of the concerto, the composer treats it with considerable freedom.

In his Symphony No. 2 Tchaikovsky harnessed the harmonic, melodic and rhythmic quirks of Ukrainian folk music to produce an opening movement massive in scale, intricate in structure and complex in texture  "one of the most solid structures Tchaikovsky ever fashioned".
