Programme Note
Carillon Chamber Choir of St Albans will perform this startlingly powerful piece on Passion Sunday and Palm Sunday. It is sung in English and runs for one hour, being a choral dramatization of St Matthew’s Gospel. The Evangelist tells the story with the chorus used as the crowd and commentator. It is hoped that this performance will bridge the gap between concert platform and church congregations.
Heinrich Schütz (1585–1672) was one of the greatest of the German composers of his century. He studied in Italy under Giovanni Gabrieli and carried back into Germany some of the lightness and dramatic fire of the Italians. Schütz was a notable contributor to the tradition of setting the Passion story. Without Schütz it is perhaps doubtful whether the great Passions of J S Bach would have been written.
