Programme Note
Crispin Lewis, conducting his second concert as newly-appointed Chief Conductor of Carillon, has chosen an attractive and varied programme of sacred and secular choral music through the ages from Spain and Latin America.
His programme introduces the audience to early 16th-century pieces from relatively unknown composers but with a folk and fun influence. Pieces by better-known composers – Lobo and Victoria – are fine examples of the flowering of Spanish sacred choral music of the late Renaissance.
The main work of the evening by the Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez is his Misa Criolla from the mid 1960s. It is accompanied by guitar, piano and drums with the talented and versatile Ian Kelleher on guitar. The most extraordinary work in the programme is La Bomba (The Pump) by Mateo Flecha El Viejo (1481-1553) – a fast and furious piece which describes, in graphic detail, a shipwreck. Expect some happy surprises from this fascinating programme – you won’t be disappointed.
