Programme Note
Amadeus Chamber Orchestra's programme is framed by two very different works inspired by Spanish princesses. The concert opens with Ravel's elegant 'Pavane pour une infante defunte', in which he presents an imaginary dance by a little Spanish princess. This is followed by Weber's Clarinet Concerto no. 2 which combines operatic lyricism and virtuosic brilliance.
The orchestral showpiece of the concert is Franz Schreker's pantomime ballet, 'Der Geburtstag der Infantin', based on an Oscar Wilde story. In his sumptuous score, Schreker evokes the splendour of the Spanish royal court and the tragic innocence of a dwarf whose love for the Infanta ends in heartbreak. Franz Schreker was one of the most celebrated opera composers of early twentieth-century Austria before his career was cut short by the rise of Nazism in the 1930s in Germany.
