Programme Note
Join us for an exclusive World Leprosy Day performance of “Treasures of Byzantium” held in the stunning surroundings of St Stephen Walbrook in the City of London.
This concert performance of newly commissioned music and dance brings to vivid life four evocative Greek poems of the Byzantine era, including 'Between Sea and Sky' three largely unaccompanied choral and solo pieces by Irish composer Solfa Carlile and the world première of 'Akathistos' by BAFTA Award-winning composer, Nick Bicât, featuring choreography by Siân Hopkins and a range of unusual wind and percussion instruments.
Director of Music, James Potter, will lead the Cantata Dramatica choir and soloists whilst the Community Choir of St Stephen Walbrook will join for the closing scenes of strife and triumph.
Robert Wright CBE, board member of the Royal Opera house, with over 40 years of experience in the music industry will be delighting us with his presence, as guest speaker of the event. Robert has been Controller of BBC Radio 3 for 17 years, and Director of BBC Proms for 7 years. Since 2014, he has been working as Chief Executive of Snape Maltings. In 2015 he was awarded a CBE in 2015 for services to music.
This unique event will be hosted by St Stephen Walbrook, an iconic City of London church featuring a circular stone altar by Henry Moore, and situated just 1 minute's walk from where Lepra was founded in 1924!
Tickets cost £20 per person
Proceeds from the evening will be dedicated to Lepra and St Stephen Walbrook - please join us for a magical night of music, and help us beat leprosy.
