Programme Note
A unique and special evening is in store for music lovers on Saturday 1st July. Suffolk-based female ensemble, Seraphim, is joining forces with Norwich Baroque to present a concert with a fascinating local connection. "Love and Sacrifice" at St. Stephen's Church, Norwich, will include two works by ever popular Norfolk-based composer, Patrick Hawes. One of these pieces, The Angel of Mons, and in fact the whole concert, is dedicated to the memory of William George Ludlow, grandfather-in-law of one of Seraphim's singers. Private Ludlow fought at the battle of Mons and saw the Angel with his own eyes, an experience which stayed with him forever. This will be the first-ever performance of Patrick Hawes’ new upper-voice version of this work.
Also part of the programme is Song of Songs, a very different but equally evocative piece with similarly soaring soprano lines and harp. Add to this the beauty of Baroque music, works by Purcell, Bach and Marcello, featuring oboe d'amore, and the evening promises to be a feast of exhilarating and uplifting music, conducted by Vetta Wise, who is also the director of Seraphim. The concert is at 7.30 pm and tickets (£16, £14, £5) are available from Norwich Theatre Royal Box Office (tel: 01603 630000), via the website www.norwichbaroque.co.uk or on the door.
