Programme Note
Brahms composed his Second Symphony with gratifying rapidity during a lakeside vacation in Austria during the summer of 1887. A work of prodigal melody, often pastoral in nature, evokes sunshine, warmth and limitless leisure - which is not to say that the symphony is without shadow.
Beethoven's Overture, Leonore No. 3 - a summing up of the opera Fidelio in microcosm - focuses on the operas protagonists. Its opening Adagio quotes Florestan's second act dungeon aria, whilst the ensuing Allegro mingles Leonore's heroic and energetic themes with the more reflective music of her husband, closing with the trumpet calls that announce Florestan's salvation.
Wagner wrote his Siegfried Idyll as a birthday present for his wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried. Premiered on the stairs of their Swiss villa in Tribschen on Christmas Day 1870, Cosima awoke to its opening melody played by a small ensemble from the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich. The Idyll contains music later heard in the opera Siegfried as well as music of personal significance for both Wagner and Cosima.
Join us on a Summers evening to discover these affectionate and sincere works in the beautiful setting of St Stephen's Church, Gloucester Road.
