Programme Note
The final concert of Tonbridge Philharmonic Society’s 2018/19 season An English Prom, features an eclectic programme of works for choir and orchestra, all written by English composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. The choir and orchestra will be conducted for the first time together by new Music Director, Mark Biggins.
The evening will start in majestic form with Walton’s Crown Imperial March, heard for the first time at the coronation of George VI. Holst’s stirring Choral Songs from the Rig Veda will be followed by Finzi’s festival anthem Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice. The second half of the concert will begin with Sullivan’s light-hearted Overture to The Yeomen of the Guard, often considered to be one of the composer’s finest scores. Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens, was set to a poem by John Milton and first performed to mark Queen Victoria’ Golden Jubilee. The concert will end in rousing style with some traditional Proms favourites, including Wood’s delightful Fantasia on British Sea Songs and Elgar’s ever-popular Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1.
