Programme Note
Berniya and Riya Hamie are the founding two thirds of Astatine Trio who in May were invited onto the elite BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme for three years. This followed their double prizewinning at Graz, Austria, in February’s Franz Schubert Competition. Mentored by Alfred Brendel on his own initiative, they became the first UK ensemble to score success there.
They bring for us these two deep and great romantic Cello Sonatas from men whose emotional temperament and dizzying pianism birthed this full-blooded Romantic music for these two instruments cast as equals.
Both composers premièred their Sonatas – Chopin in his very last public concert.
There'll be three other pieces showcasing these two special sisters, but we’re all conspiring to keeping that music secret until the performance!
BTW, it’s “Burn-eye-er and Ree-er Hay-mee”, and they've performed publicly as a duo since childhood. Here's their message:
“We are so excited to be presenting two of the greatest works for cello and piano, both packed with drama and exquisite lyricism. Putting these Sonatas side by side is a rare opportunity to witness first hand the way that Chopin's late Cello Sonata – his last music to be published in his lifetime – inspired the 27-year-old Rachmaninov's tribute, and to explore the similarities and differences between these two masterworks, both set in the tragic key of G minor but ending triumphantly in G major.
“We can't wait to be bringing this programme to Worthing alongside three exciting secret pieces!”
The format is full concert performance, plus interviewing conversations, audience questions, and also the musical features ‘Guess The Composer’ and ‘Give It A Title’. These elements always create a special intimate and interactive concert experience at this marvellous venue - such a beautiful, pillarless, and moveable seating performing space.
Audience written feedback verdicts at pianist Yi-Yang Chen’s sell-out event in May:

* “I really liked the idea of the Interview Concerts and will definitely follow the next ones. I believe what you have done has brought an absolutely precious opportunity for people to get involved with the music and the artist” – Mahya, Chichester
