Programme Note
Verdi’s opera tells a tale of forbidden love, political conspiracies, fortune telling, betrayal and tragedy. The cast is led by Mark Ellse (Ricardo), Martin Muir (Renato), Liz Williams (Amelia), Ami Walsh (Ulrica), Anna Murgatroyd (Oscar), Lyndsey Evans (Edgar), Mike Hammond (Silvano), Glyn Jones (Tom), Simon Thompson (Samuel), Laurence Lewis (the Chief Magistrate) and Julie Van Haperen (Amelia’s servant). The production will be directed by Mark Ellse, with Kate Wishart returning as Musical Director.
Whilst preparing for a masked ball, Prince Ricardo is informed by his friend and advisor, Renato, that there are people conspiring against him; Ricardo refuses to believe him.
After being informed by Ulrica (the local fortune-teller) that he's going to be killed by a friend, Ricardo intercepts Amelia, the wife of Renato. They confess their forbidden love for each other, but unfortunately for them, Renato discovers them together and vows to join the conspirators in the plot to assassinate Ricardo.
Will Ulrica’s predictions come true? Will Renato go through with the assassination of his friend?
Featuring fabulous music by Verdi, A Masked Ball will be performed (in English) at St Thomas a Becket Church, Ramsey on Saturday 4th November at 7.30pm. This performance will be accompanied by piano.
