Programme Note
Baritone Alex Poulton and pianist Karen Kingsley will perform a selection of songs that have inspired them throughout their lives, with relizations of Purcell by both Tippet and Britten, including the magnificent Let the Dreadful Engines of Eternal Will and three songs from Finzi’s Earth and Air and Rain, all settings of Thomas Hardy poems. Karen will perform one of Parry’s Shulbrede tunes as a piano solo and the first half will conclude with a couple of wonderfully idiomatic Britten folk song settings.
Alex is currently performing Papageno and will play Count Almaviva in July and will perform a couple of arias from Die Zauberflöte and Le Nozze di Figaro. He has had a life long fascination with the Schubert and Schumann song cycles and will sing a short collection of lieder from Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise and Dichterliebe.
