Programme Note
For his debut at The Stoller Hall James Lisney performs music centred around the theme of climate and nature, including Debussy’s La cathédrale engloutie, a piece based on an ancient Breton myth in which a cathedral, submerged underwater off the coast of the Island of Ys, rises up from the sea on clear mornings when the water is transparent. This is followed by Peter Grimes’ Fantasy for piano, reflecting on his conflict with the sea. Continuing the theme of sound and nature Scriabin’s piece was inspired by his contention that the constant accumulation of heat would lead the earth to its ultimate destruction. Lisney will finish his performance with Beethoven, an exhilarating example of positivity and possibility – a nod to impact music can have on the future of the climate emergency.
